Varrun’s project focuses on leveraging CRISPR-Cas9 screening in THP-1 cells to uncover key regulators of macrophage polarization and fibrosis. He is also investigating neurite outgrowth on laminin gradients and analyzing biomarkers associated with diabetic kidney disease and lupus nephritis.
Shri Chada (Cypress Woods High School, Cypress, TX)
During the summer research internship, Shri’s project focuses on developing new diagnostic antibodies for IBD point of care tests, molecular taxonomy of renal diseases using high-dimensional proteomic data, detecting and mitigating domain bias in medical AI, and co authoring a manuscript on the synergistic effects of IL-4, IL-13, IL-10 on M2 macrophage polarization.
Harini Venkatesh (Philips Exeter Academy, Exeter, NH)
Harini’s project focuses on studying the impact of select protein biomarkers on the blood-brain barrier in neuropsychiatric lupus using Western blotting and permeability assays, and she is working on an Arduino-based device to measure the electrical resistance across cell barriers. She is also studying the roles of various ECM proteins in renal fibrosis using qPCR and immunofluorescence..
Anandhitha Arasu (Coppell High School, Coppell, TX)
Anandhitha’s point-of-care diagnostic project involves detecting biomarkers in urine and saliva samples from patients with lupus nephritis using a vertical flow assay platform. In addition, she is currently working on the manuscript for this project, as well as co-authoring a separate manuscript on the synergistic effects of IL-4, IL-13, and IL-10 on M2 macrophage polarization.

Ronuk’s summer internship research projects involve the development of an arduino-based sensor to measure trans-epithelial/endothelial electrical resistance, particularly as it relates to the blood brain barrier breach observed in neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus; he also is analyzing spatial proteomics of proteins implicated in pediatric lupus nephritis glomerular micrographs generated via imaging mass cytometry, focusing specifically on epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity.

Suchay’s summer internship project involves developing a pipeline to segment and classify various immune cells in the kidney using membrane proteomic expression profiles and diverse Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence techniques; neighborhood analysis will be used to identify the interactions / cross-talks between the immune cell populations in low disease and high disease lupus patients.
Mahith Gottipati (Dulles High School, Sugarland, TX)
Mahith’s summer internship project focuses on a novel approach to segment and classify kidney tubules from Lupus Nephritis biopsies using spatial proteomics data, employing an array of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques and models; the tubule proteomic data will then be correlated with Lupus disease severity.

Hubert Lu is a rising senior at Carnegie Vanguard High School in Houston, Texas, with interests in improving diagnostics and biomarkers for diseases such as cancer and lupus. Hubert’s project will compare and contrast novel biomarkers for stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer and colorectal cancer, discovered using a comprehensive aptamer-based screen.

Sanjay Krishna is a rising senior at Seven Lakes High School in Katy Texas, with interests in medicine and public health advocacy, Indian classical music, and learning new things about human biology. Sanjay’s project will focus on identifying circulating autoantibodies that are associated with renal pathology activity or chronicity in lupus nephritis.
